Course Goal: In this workshop, you will understand the three core areas of knowledge and skill needed to pass the MFT licensing exams (both California and the National Exam used in the other 49 states).
Learning Objectives: At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

- Describe major findings of 2 large-scale research studies on exam pass rates in mental health.
- Explain at least 2 exam preparation strategies based on recent research.

Dr. Diane Gehart
After being an LMFT for 25 years in California, I decided to pursue licensure in Hawai'i. When I applied, I learned that I would need to take the current National MFT Exam.
At first, I was offended.
After decades of experience and writing numerous leading books in the field, I needed to take a licensing exam to prove myself? How could this be possible???
After letting the news sink in, I started laughing, and nostalgia for my grad school days returned.
I got excited. Bring it on! Aloha, MFT Exam!
To make the process fun, I decided to create an 8-week course where others could join me in studying for the exam: Laugh Your Way to Licensure was born.
The course began on a random whim: "study with your textbook author for your licensing exam."
Over those 8 weeks, I discovered that there were numerous people who "knew the material" but could not pass, even when they tried with numerous other programs.
I was curious... and concerned.
However, most of the students in that first course finally passed after going through the program.
I decided to not only continue to offer Laugh Your Way to Licensure but to also do a research study with my colleague Dr Kevin Lyness at Antioch University in New England. Our research findings identified some startling patterns, which the National Association of Social Workers also found in their research.
For the last 4 years I have continued to personally coach thousands of exam candidates to pass, and we have identified a 3-part formula that works.

Dr. Diane Gehart is the Founder of the Therapy that Works Institute and is Professor Emerita at California State University, Northridge.
