Everyday ethics covers the fundamental laws and ethical concepts in mental health, including the purpose of professional ethics, scopes of competence and practice, privilege, confidentiality, informed consent, dual relationships, consultation requirements, and business ethics. Emphasis is placed on how to practically manage the most common ethical and legal issues in daily practice, including demonstrations for conducting verbal informed consent.

Opportunities and Challenges for Mental Health Practitioners

Wondering how to navigate digital platforms and social media as a mental health practitioner? In this workshop, we will explore some of the common ethical considerations and opportunities to ensure you navigate these new challenges successfully.

Course Goal: By the end of this program, participants will be able to: describe ethical and legal requirements for working and marketing online as a mental health professional.

Learning Objectives: At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Participants will be able to describe the key elements from the 4 major mental health codes of ethics related to operating their business(es) in the digital age.
2. Participants will be able to identify at least 2 ethical considerations related to social media and clinical practice.
3. Participants will be able to identify at least 2 ethical requirements commonly found in mental health professional codes of ethics for practicing Telehealth

Instructor

Dr. Diane Gehart, Professor in the Marriage and Family Therapy and Counseling Programs at California State University, Northridge. She has authored numerous titles including Mindfulness for Chocolate Lovers: A Lighthearted Way to Stress Less and Savor More Each Day, Mindfulness and Acceptance in Couple and Family Therapy, Mastering Competencies in Family Therapy, and Theory and Treatment Planning in Counseling and Psychotherapy.

CE Approval: These courses have been approved for a total of 7 hours of law and ethics continuing education by the NBCC and CAMFT.

Therapy that Works Institute (Provider #1000141) is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and LEPs.
